Went to the zoo today with some friends and brought along the new Canon EOS R5 (pre-production unit) to play and test out the animal AF. I am not wildlife photographer and I always found it difficult to get focus on animals (mainly due to inexperience) but I was blown away by how easy it was to get animals in focus, especially the eyes. Honestly one of the more exciting updates to the AF system on the R line of cameras. Absolutely blown away!!
Questions that popped into my head was what does the camera interpret as an "animal". Watched quite a number of reviews talking about how the AF is programmed to pick up birds, cats and dogs. But to my surprise, it caught on to the eyes of tapirs, giraffes, lions/tigers (okay yes they are somewhat cats) and even otters. Super curious how the camera interprets what an animal is.
